Why generics are cheaper than original drugs?

The main reason for the low price of generic medicines is that their production requires a much smaller expenditure. The lower cost of generics and therefore, they are sold at a lower price and retain profitability.

Generic Manufacturers do not spend money on:

  • Research and development product;
  • A certificate confirming the safety and efficacy of the medication.
  • Advertising and promotion

First, the manufacturers of generic drugs do not spend money to develop drugs, as they use a ready-made original medicine to produce bioequivalent versions.

Second, generic manufacturers do not need to confirm the safety and efficacy of drugs in clinical trials – they have to prove only bioequivalence of generic and original medication.

Third, Generics have a huge advantage, they do not need, unlike the new brand-name drugs in advertising and promotion, and recommendations among consumers.

Generic is available only after the expiry of patent protection the original drug. That is, this drug is on the market for 10 years or more, that of course is proof of the effectiveness and safety of Generics are made based on it, so Generics do not need additional advertising.

The cost of research, development and testing, licensing, promotion and advertising incurred by the large pharmaceutical companies to submit new drug on the market, are often the cause of the very high cost brand-name drugs. Pharmaceutical companies developers need to recoup costs and make a profit before the expiry of patent protection.

The manufacturers of generics do not have these expenses, the cost of bioequivalence testing and manufacturing, that is all that is required for the sale.
