Diagnosis of alcoholism

Diagnostic difficulties may represent a differentiation of the I stage of alcoholism and drunkenness without alcohol dependence. The diagnosis is based on the information received from the patient and his entourage. Surveyed often tend consciously or unconsciously to dissimulate signs of desire and dependence and to downplay the degree of drunkenness. Information from loved ones or from work is also not always reliable: sometimes alcoholism downplayed sometimes exaggerated.

Pattern of withdrawal symptoms is a convincing sign of stage II. Diagnosis of stage III is based on the obvious signs of alcohol degradation and reduced tolerance to alcohol.

Laboratory methods for diagnosis of alcoholism has not yet been developed. The proposed methods (the increase in the activity of blood enzymes – gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, aspartate – and alanine aminotransferase, catalase, etc., the increase in red blood cells) turned out to be non-specific and often give a positive result only at the II stage of alcoholism. The developed method radioisotope hepatography stating the damage to the liver due to chronic alcohol intoxication.

Efficiency of alcohol treatment

If they have formed alcoholism physical addiction treatment is not always effective. After treatment, remission duration more than one year amount to 50-60%. Effect significantly higher only for those who actively want to be cured. That is why some fancy healers, widely promoted by the media or spread rumors about them, reported the striking results – 90-100% cured. Are drawn to them and they select those who are committed to recovery. The effect of treatment in stage I is higher than II stage. But the timely treatment of stage I prevents alcoholic anosognosia – patients do not consider themselves alcoholics and are confident that if they want, they will stop drinking.

Life expectancy in patients with alcoholism on average 15 years shorter than the General population. They die from severe injuries sustained in a drunken coetanei, high level of suicides. Among somatic diseases mortality is greatest from heart failure, hypertension, strokes and cirrhosis of the liver.
